Bargain Europe: Places to Go in This Year

For European culture, exquisite cuisine and history without the surprise of stickers, these are this year’s budget goals.

Yes, you can have a first-class vacation on the continent, beyond the tried and tested (and overcrowded and expensive) European capitals. Here are five of our favorite cities where your Dollar will increase even more thanks to the surprising hotel prices and your Instagram will be envied by everyone at home.

1. Prague, Czech Republic

Prague is sometimes considered the most beautiful city in Europe, thanks to architectural highlights such as Charles Bridge, Prague Castle and the historic Old Town square. The city has experienced a tourist boom in recent years, thanks in part to comfortable accommodations that start at night and culinary delights such as a variety of cheeses, dumplings, tripe soup and cold sparkling Pils.

2. Athens, Greece

The Dollar continues in the cradle of democracy, Philosophy and, finally, Western civilization in general. You will be impressed by ancient wonders such as the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena Nike on the Acropolis (preferably in the afternoon and early evening thanks to the setting sun and night lighting). You may also be impressed by the hotel’s low prices, with excellent rooms ranging from overnight. But this city is not just a classic antiquity: save time to visit the local Tavern for small plates, fresh seafood and Dolmades, as well as the popular strong local liqueur Ouzo.

3. Porto, Portugal, Portugal

Porto is one of the “second cities” In Europe to achieve huge savings. Porto is the second largest city in Portugal after Lisbon and is located in the Douro region, known for its fantastic plonks, including, of course, the rich red port. But port has much more to offer than plonk. Enjoy fun public markets like the Mercado do Bolhao, contemporary art galleries along Rua Miguel Boomarda and playful architecture like the Casa da Musica designed by Rem Koolhaas. Head to the Ribeira district to visit cafes and bars, then navigate the ancient winding streets of the city in search of the sculpture of the port of Henry the Navigator. Reliable accommodation in Porto starts at night.

4. Lodz, Poland

Our colleagues from Budget Travel’s parent company, Lonely Planet, have chosen Lodz, Poland, as one of the best destinations of 2019 and the third largest city in Poland by “where?”for “Wow!”for many travelers. The revitalization of industrial spaces has made old factories and other buildings a popular destination for shopping, culture and fun, including a new planetarium, a science and technology center and the MS2 Art Museum.

5. Budapest, Hungary

Overlooking the iconic Danube, from hotels that start the night to some of the most delicious street food In Europe, including Langos, basically fried bread with sour cream, cheese and garlic (we know, right?). The large covered market should be a first stop for gourmets, but don’t miss the Schlossberg, a UNESCO World Heritage site, including the Royal Palace (dating back to the thirteenth century). you should book a sightseeing cruise on the Danube and get ready to take unforgettable photos of the city’s majestic Chain Bridge.
